Remote Usb Power Switch For Mac

Hey all, I've been thinking about cleaning up my living room and moving my PC closer to my AVR, but am a little confused about whether I can successfully turn ON the PC with the remote control. I don't mean turn it on from sleep, but actually power it on and off with a remote.

I think I saw something about getting a component that somehow plugs in between the motherboard and PSU to wake it, not sure if that's right, also the post was older. Some newer posts say my motherboard needs something called a ' CIR header ', but 1. I'm not sure if my MOBO has one ( don't think so ) it's a P8z77 v pro and 2. I can't find a clear post about doing it a different way.

Any suggestions from the guru's out there? This is the only thing I've found so far that does what I think it does: although upon further reading I'm not sure I want to splice this cable on to one of the PSU wires.

Perhaps I will try the MCE IR ( with RC whatever that means ) route and then try to have my harmony learn the commands of the cheap remote. It won't turn on or off, but will put it to sleep and wake it up. The draw back of this is I've been having periodic problems with the sleep function since I installed the p8z77 v pro and upgraded to windows 8.

I still think that the SIMEREC device is the only avenue right now aside from switching motherboards to something like ASRock or an actual Intel branded board, both of which I know still put a CIR header on their boards (I recently bought an ASRock H77M-ITX for a client for this exact reason). From what I recall, without the CIR header, there's no way to interact with the S5 power state within ACPI. That's the 'Wake from off' portion. With a USB device I think you're limited to S3 (Standby) and/or S4 (Hibernate). There might be another way, but again I don't think your board supports it. I have seen instances where the motherboard can be set to have the USB active all the time, even in an S5 state.

Zotac has this feature on their boards via a jumper, and I think their Nanos do too via an option in the bios (I'll have to check mine). Most just have Timer/PS2/PCI/PCIe/Network wake options, but with a board that supports USB wake you could have a USB device wake the PC from an S5 state.
